The best AI assistant apps for Android in 2026

Updated 23 Oct 2026 · 3 min read

There are now several good AI assistants for Android, and they're good at different things. Here's what each one does best, where it falls short, and how to choose. A note up front: we make Kora, so weigh our view accordingly — we've tried to be fair about where others are stronger.

How we compared them

We looked at the things that matter on a phone rather than in a browser:

  • Actions: can it do things in your apps, or only answer?
  • Language: does it understand and reply well in yours?
  • Default assistant: can it replace Google's assistant on the power button or corner swipe?
  • Memory: does it remember context you've shared?
  • Cost: is the free version genuinely usable?

Google Gemini

Gemini is built into most new Android phones and is the default assistant on many of them. It's at its best inside Google's own world — Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube — and it's strong at general knowledge and understanding images.

Best for: people who live in Google's apps. Watch out for: people moving from the old Google Assistant sometimes find familiar quick actions work differently.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the best-known AI chat app, excellent for writing, explaining and thinking things through, with a natural voice mode. On Android it can be set as your default assistant.

Best for: writing, learning and long conversations. Watch out for: it's built for conversation more than for doing things inside your other apps.

Perplexity

Perplexity answers questions with sources you can check, which makes it good for research and anything where you want to verify the answer. It can also be set as your default assistant on Android.

Best for: research and fact-checking. Watch out for: it's an answer engine first; everyday phone tasks aren't its focus.

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot is Microsoft's assistant, with a free app and close ties to Microsoft 365 — Word, Outlook and Teams.

Best for: people who work in Microsoft's apps. Watch out for: fewer phone-level actions than an assistant built for Android.

Meta AI

Meta AI lives inside WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger, so many people already have it without installing anything.

Best for: quick questions without leaving a chat. Watch out for: it works inside Meta's apps, not across your phone.

Kora

Kora is built to do the task rather than describe it: it writes your WhatsApp or Telegram message and opens the chat for your tap, adds events to your calendar, sets one-off and repeating reminders, plays music on Spotify or YouTube, and finds places near you. It remembers your people and plans (you can edit or delete that memory), chats in 50+ languages and speaks in 25, and can be your default assistant.

Best for: everyday tasks across the apps you already use, in your own language. Watch out for: Android only; hands-free “Hey Kora” is part of Kora Plus; the free plan has a daily allowance.

Which one should you pick?

  • You mostly ask questions and write → ChatGPT or Gemini.
  • You want sources for everything → Perplexity.
  • You live in Google's apps → Gemini.
  • You want an assistant that sends the message and sets the reminder for you, in your language → Kora.

You don't have to choose just one. Many people keep a chat app for writing and set an action-focused assistant as their default. Here's how to change your default assistant.

Common questions

Which AI assistant is best for Android?

It depends on what you need. Gemini is strongest inside Google's apps, ChatGPT for writing and conversation, Perplexity for research, and Kora for doing everyday tasks across apps like WhatsApp in your own language.

Can I use more than one AI assistant?

Yes. Only one can be your default assistant, but you can install and open as many as you like.

Are these AI assistants free?

All of them have a free version. Paid plans add things like higher limits, better voices or hands-free features.

Which AI assistant works best in my language?

Most understand many languages, but quality varies. Try a few real requests in your language. Kora chats in 50+ languages and speaks in 25, and treats your language as the default rather than a translation.
