How to send WhatsApp messages by voice on Android
Typing a message while you're walking, cooking or carrying something is a pain. There are three ways to send a WhatsApp message with your voice on Android — from simple dictation to fully hands-free — and each suits a different moment.
The three options at a glance
| Method | Hands needed? | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Keyboard dictation | To open the chat and send | Long messages you want to check word by word |
| Voice assistant | Little or none | Quick messages while busy or on the move |
| Voice note | To hold the mic | When tone matters more than text |
Option 1: Dictate with your keyboard
- Open WhatsApp and the chat you want.
- Tap the message box, then tap the microphone on your keyboard (Gboard, Samsung Keyboard and most others have one).
- Speak naturally. Say punctuation out loud — “comma”, “full stop” or “period”, “question mark”.
- Check the text, fix anything misheard, and tap send.
Dictation works in many languages: switch your keyboard language first so it understands you. The downside is that you still need your hands to open the right chat.
Option 2: Ask a voice assistant (hands-free)
A voice assistant can find the contact, open WhatsApp and write the message for you.
With Kora: say “Hey Kora, tell Mum on WhatsApp I'm on my way” — or open Kora and say it. Kora writes the message, reads it back, and opens the chat with the text ready. Nothing sends until you tap, so a misheard word never goes out by accident. It works the same way in 50+ languages, and for Telegram and SMS too.
With Google's assistant: on many phones you can say “Send a WhatsApp message to Mum saying I'm on my way”. Whether it works depends on your phone, language and settings.
Tip: make the assistant your phone's default so a long-press of the power button or a corner swipe opens it. See how to change the default assistant.
Option 3: Send a voice note instead
- Open the chat.
- Hold the microphone button next to the message box and speak.
- Release to send — or slide up to lock recording for longer notes.
Voice notes keep your tone, but the other person has to listen to them. Kora can also sum up voice notes you share with it, and record a reply for you.
Tips for better results
- Use the name exactly as it's saved in your contacts.
- Say “on WhatsApp” so the assistant doesn't pick SMS.
- For long messages, say them in two or three shorter parts.
- Speak in the language you want the message written in.
- Always glance at the text before it goes — especially names and numbers.
A word on driving
Hands-free messaging is safer than typing, but any distraction at the wheel is risky, and the rules differ by country. Use a hands-free assistant, keep your eyes on the road, and keep it short.
Common questions
Can I send a WhatsApp message without touching my phone at all?
Some assistants can send after a spoken confirmation. Kora deliberately waits for your tap before anything goes out, so a misheard message is never sent by accident.
Does voice messaging work in Spanish, Portuguese, Russian or Turkish?
Yes. Keyboard dictation works in many languages once you switch your keyboard language. Kora understands and writes messages in 50+ languages.
Can an assistant read my WhatsApp messages out loud?
Kora can read your incoming notifications and help you reply, if you give it notification access. That permission is optional.
Is it the same on iPhone?
This guide is for Android. Kora is Android-only for now.
